The Truckee Town Council will get an update on the Brickelltown Streetscape project at their regular meeting on Nov. 5 and the public will also be given an opportunity to comment and provide feedback. Phase one of the project, which includes public involvement and the creation of preliminary designs for the corridor extending from Spring Street to the McIver roundabout, was authorized by the council in July at a cost of $429,000.
In addition to presenting two proposed design alternatives, Senior Town Engineer Todd Landry will recommend that council consider the establishment of a maintenance or assessment district for Brickelltown. Annual maintenance costs for the proposed Brickelltown improvements will likely be in the neighborhood of $175,000, according to the project’s contractor, Eastern Sierra Engineers.
Landry will also recommend that the council look for ways to reduce the anticipated construction costs for the project. The budget approved in the Town’s Capital Improvement Program is $6.54 million, yet the estimated price tag for the alternatives being considered ranges from $8 million to $10 million.
Citizens involved in the public process so far seem to prefer alternative B, which includes the construction of sidewalks, the addition of on-street and mixed use parking areas, a community plaza, several pocket parks, circulation improvements, public art installations and landscape buffers. This conceptual design also calls for the realignment of a portion of Donner Pass Road, the only significant difference from alternative A. Both plans being considered would require an easement from Union Pacific Railroad, the property owners along the southern stretch of the project area.
Mitch Clarin, a realtor and Brickelltown property owner, has been involved since the beginning and is enthusiastic about the effort. “Brickelltown people are passionate about Brickelltown. It’s great that the town and the people of Brickelltown are working together to bring much needed streetscape and sidewalk improvements!”
It’s not too late to get involved in the Brickelltown Streetscape Project public process. The third public workshop is scheduled for Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. at Truckee Town Hall and a fourth is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 27.
