The sun, the moon, and the Earth will align on Sunday, May 20. That’s also the same day FiftyFifty Brewing Co. turns 5. And it just so happens that the Truckee microbrewery is well known for its Eclipse barrel-aged imperial stout. Do you believe in coincidences? Either way, FiftyFifty is throwing a party.

Truckee/Tahoe is fortunate to lie in the path of the annular eclipse that starts in China on May 21. The eclipse will travel across the date line and hit the western coast of the U.S. in the evening on May 20. While cities including San Francisco and Sacramento will not see this astronomical event, Truckee lies in the path of totality for the annular eclipse, which occurs when the sun and moon line up, but the perceived size of the moon is smaller than the sun. In an annular eclipse, the sun will shine as a bright, fiery ring outlining the moon. The eclipse will take place around 6:30 p.m. for several minutes above Truckee.

“It’s a pretty unique experience,” said Alicia Barr, who owns FiftyFifty Brewing Co.

Together with local nonprofit High Fives, FiftyFifty is hosting a block party in honor of the event and its anniversary. There will be live music by Forget the Roses, a bounce house, barbecue, as well as a raffle and silent auction to raise funds for High Fives.

“We wanted to do some kind of nonprofit partnership just to spread the love,” Barr said. “[High Fives] is a really great organization to work with. We really appreciate what they try to do — getting people back to living a happy, healthy lifestyle.”

FiftyFifty will also be clearing out its cellar and selling some rare bottles and previous vintages of Eclipse and other barrel-aged blends. For Eclipse, FiftyFifty brewers age their Totality imperial stout in oak bourbon barrels for six months. Eclipse has won awards including a Silver Medal at the 2011 European Beer Star Awards. Eclipse is only released once a year in December, so FiftyFifty will only be selling older vintages at the party.

The party starts at noon, but will last through the evening. FiftyFifty will provide sunglasses to view the eclipse with your ticket.
