You may also be considering which book to hunker down with during blustery fall evenings. Naturally, there are Stephen King novels to make a stomach turn and who doesn’t love a gripping Anne Rice vampire tale? But, what about reading a 'classic'? One that incorporates the spookiness of Halloween yet contains all those qualities that make a complex story compelling? Such is Bram Stoker’s 'Dracula,' published in 1897.

  • Twelve years ago, a group of seven lesbian women in Santa Rosa, Calif., wrote a play entitled Lavender Roses. The play, incorporating music and humor, was a way to share their life experiences, with a special focus on their spiritual journeys. To this day the play continues to be invited into communities all over Northern California. And now, on Nov. 17, Lavender Roses comes to the Elks Lodge in Grass Valley.

  • Two summers ago, I went to Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day in Meeks Bay. As I approached the event grounds, a voice stopped me in my tracks. It was enveloping and soothing, carried on crystalline sound that emanated from a makeshift stage next to Lake Tahoe’s shore. I stood, transfixed, as the small woman with dreads finished her set.
