We all have some sort of a relationship with karma. Whether you refuse to kill a fly or if you scoff when someone says “karma will get you,” you are acknowledging that such a thing exists to some degree. Karma is the focus of Roger Gabriel’s keynote speech at Granlibakken Tahoe’s Wellness Weekend.

Gabriel is a master educator at The Chopra Center, a wellness center founded on the consciousness-based teachings of Vedic science. The center integrates cutting-edge research and modern medicine into their experiences, education, teacher trainings, and products. We spoke with Gabriel about his experiences with karma, his relationship with Deepak Chopra, and why you should attend this seminar even if you’re the type to scoff when karma is mentioned.

Your seminar at Granlibakken’s Wellness Weekend is titled “Release the Karmic Secret.” What exactly does this mean and what will you be doing in your seminar?

The word karma is widely used in our everyday vocabulary but is most often misunderstood. Karma means action and for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction. Karma is actually energy, neither good nor bad. It’s stored energy that we have created and continue to create with our actions and, at some time, that energy needs to be released. Our whole life and everything that happens to us is a result of our previous actions and the energy being released. The only reason we are here is because of karma. My talk will, hopefully, give people a better understanding of what is karma, how we create it, how we process it, how we can minimize its effects on our lives, and what it means to fully release all our karmic baggage.

Tell us about your relationship with Deepak Chopra. And for people not familiar with Chopra, explain why he is so important in the wellness community.

Deepak Chopra and I met as a result of us both being part of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) organization. Deepak was a western-trained physician wanting to become more involved in Ayurveda and complementary medicine; I was working for the organization setting up Ayurvedic centers. In 1987, Deepak invited me to work with him at his center in the Boston area. In 1993, we left the TM Organization, relocated to San Diego, and what has now evolved into the Chopra Center was born. Deepak has a unique ability to combine often very abstract knowledge from a wide variety of sources — science, medicine, poetry, literature, modern and ancient spirituality — and present it in a format that’s both accessible and practical for a modern audience. His commitment is to raise the collective consciousness of the world as the only lasting solution to the multitude of challenges we face.

What would you say to people who are on the fence about attending the wellness weekend?

As I mentioned, my talk will just be one part of the weekend so you don’t have to believe in karma to benefit. My aim isn’t to convert anyone to my way of thinking. I’ll present what I know and hopefully give people some food for thought. I’ll try to make it fun too. With everything going on in the world today, I think we all need to take a break from the news and pamper ourselves for a few days. This weekend has many good presenters and offers a wide variety of opportunities for people to reconnect with their true, inner selves. Whether people have been around these practices for a long time or are brand new to them, I think there will be lots for everyone to enjoy and learn.
