Say Hello to My Little Friend ... Boscoe the Mini Horse

Companionship is a blessing humans often take for granted, and when it comes to our animals, we sometimes forget it’s equally important for their well-being. Seven years ago, Tahoe City resident Sharon Silver lost her eldest horse, Kazaam, who lived a vibrant 32 years.

Eleven of those years Kazaam spent side-by-side with Silver’s other horse, Shakhing, who quickly became aware of Kazaam’s absence. Silver contacted UC Davis, and they determined he was mourning, much like humans do, after the loss of a loved one.

Deeply passionate about her horses, Silver immediately took it upon herself to find Shakhing a buddy to keep him company at the stables. “Shakhing hated him at first!” Silver recollects, laughing. “Boscoe had so much energy, it took him a while to come around.”

Smaller, bouncier, and unafraid to initiate play, Boscoe the mini horse brought an energy back into Shakhing’s life that may have not come otherwise. A reminder that at the end of the day, we all just want companionship, and to feel all right.
