The National Newspaper Association recently announced the winners in its Better Newspaper Contest, in which Moonshine Ink won three editorial awards. The Truckee monthly competed against U.S. newspapers of similar size and circulation. Moonshine Ink took home first-place awards for Best Environmental Story and Best Investigative or In-Depth Story or Series, and a third-place award for Best Editorial. There were 2,245 entries in the Better Newspaper Contest and a total of 541 awards were won, according to the association.

David Bunker, a contributing editor for Moonshine Ink, received first place for Best Investigative Story for his articles on Tahoe Forest Hospital, New Revelations and Transformation, published in the July 2014 edition. Mountain Life Associate Editor Melissa Siig received a first place award for Best Environmental Story for her Oct. 2014 article on the Truckee River, When the River Stops Flowing. The entire Moonshine Ink editorial team was recognized for its editorial, Keeping the Conversation Going, which was published in the Aug. 2014 issue in response to the community’s reaction to Moonshine’s hospital coverage.
