Last Year Was Not Normal, Time to Rise Up Locally

For many the national news is a blur. Each day the norms we treasure are threatened — from the environment to the economy, from healthcare to immigration. It’s particularly unnerving to realize how the administration’s recklessness is impacting our local community and region:

• Our community is seeing businesses close and ubiquitous help wanted signs, but Congress ignores immigration reform, criminalizes DACA youth, and pushes for a costly border wall.

• Our community pleads for affordable housing while pro-growth policies incentivize vacation housing to the detriment of public safety, disaster preparedness, and environmental protection.

• At of the end of 2017, we have 129 million dead trees in California and the devastating wildfires are made worse by the tinderbox left behind; yet, no Congress nor Congressman has offered a solution, plan, or even a willing ear.

• “Climate change is a hoax” we’re told, as we wait for even average snowfall.

• Respect for the Earth that sustains us, and which we cherish here in Tahoe/Truckee, is replaced on the federal level with enticements to established energy companies rather than supporting sustainable alternatives.

This past year was not normal. Once again, it’s time to rise up! Only by taking action do we have a chance. As former President Theodore Roosevelt once said,

“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing.”

Invite a neighbor, colleague, or mother to join you at the Women’s March on Jan. 20 at the North Tahoe Event Center. Make your signs, and bring the kids — you will be happy you did.
