A 22-year-old man was found dead in Truckee this morning in what appears to have been a suicide, according to Dr. Rob Leri, superintendent of the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District.

The victim was seen near the Truckee Pines Apartments near Brockway Road early in the morning by students waiting at the school bus stop across the street, Dr. Leri said.

The police were immediately notified, and Dr. Leri initiated calls to the parents of all students who might have witnessed the scene, suggesting that they might have seen "a disturbing crime scene," he said.

Truckee police said it does not appear there was foul play involved, nor is there any public safety concern to the broader community, Capt. Harwood Mitchell said.

Counselors have been meeting with students at Truckee High School and Alder Creek Middle School throughout the day to offer support, Dr. Leri said.

Students returning home to the Truckee Pines stop on the afternoon school bus were met with district staff, who discouraged them from crossing the street to investigate the crime scene, according to Leri.

A Grief Support resource is available on the district website, click here.
