Ira Kessey and his team of four snow sculptors have applied to Breckenridge’s International Snow Sculpture Championships the past three years. Their persistence paid off, and this year the local group made up of Kessey, Tryggvi Larum, Larry Dion, and Ray Kinman will partake as Team Iceland (Larum is from Iceland) in the 27th annual five-day competition.

Locally, the team has competed in Northstar California’s Carve Tahoe event in both 2012 and 2013, and most recently crafted a sleigh at the new Tahoe City Winter Sports Park. “It’s a neat event and features the most talented snow sculptors,” Kessey described the international competition, where sixteen teams of four sculptors from around the world will carve a 20-ton block of snow. Team Iceland will create Ancestry in Ice, a Viking warship on the high seas.
