Do you like to drink beer with your friends? Great, continue reading. Are you a wealth of useless knowledge? Even better. Do you find yourself knowing more answers on Jeopardy than the nerdy contestants? Well, look no further.
No matter what your story is, trivia nights are a time-honored mountain town tradition, right there with open mic night, karaoke, and happy hour. It is a great way to sit down with friends after a long day on the mountain (or, let’s be honest, at work) to socialize, have a few beers, and exercise your brain — all while getting in bed before midnight to do it all over again. What’s really nice is if your team is particularly brainy, you can usually get your bar tab taken care of.
Mellow Fellow, the gastropub that specializes in American craft beers and locally made sausages, with locations in Truckee and Kings Beach, has a trivia night that is not to be missed. The antics take place on Monday nights in Truckee and Tuesday nights in Kings Beach from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
The format is simple: Four rounds, each with a different category decided by the host. The final category is chosen by the previous week’s winning team. Teams cap out at six members. The night is hosted by Ryan in Truckee and Liam in Kings Beach and the winning team each night is awarded a $25 bar tab, not to mention the upper hand of choosing the next week’s final category.
Alibi Ale Works is a craft brewery located in Incline Village that makes their beer with water straight from Lake Tahoe. Every Tuesday night from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Kristi, the evening’s host, gives Alex Trebek a run for his money.
Alibi’s format is four rounds, each made up of 15 to 20 questions. The category for the first three rounds is dealer’s choice. For the final round, the five categories that make up the 15 to 20 questions are chosen from a list of topics, each posted online the week prior. Only five people are allowed per team.
At Alibi, the stakes are a bit higher but require more consistent dedication. Each week the winning team earns points they keep through the entire month; whichever team has the most points at the end of the month wins a $250 bar tab. With a beer price tag of $6, this totals out to 41 beers!
But don’t let these nights fool you — we live in a region where people are competitive by nature, so things will get heated. Pick your team wisely, hold Trivial Pursuit tryouts, and get your butt to trivia night. Not only will you be supporting some awesome local businesses, but you will be having an awesome time. Because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t like having a semi-focused activity to do while hanging out at the bar?
