On Sunday, May 20 a solar eclipse will darken the evening skies, leaving only a thin ring of sunlight around the moon. This celestial event will be witnessed by millions of people around the world, but in Northern Nevada at Pyramid Lake a unique and magical festival will be celebrating the eclipse by creating a symbiotic relationship of music, art, nature, and community.
The Symbiosis Gathering is a five-day festival that aims to provide a worldly and all-encompassing experience. Vibrant and visual art will create an aesthetic surrounding and enhance the ancient natural environment of Pyramid Lake, all while showcasing a monumental musical lineup. There will be workshops on ecological sustainability, yoga, and dancing, including flow arts, belly, ceremonial, and tribal. There will also be a large marketplace filled with vendors selling jewelry, clothing, and accessories.
The art will be mind-blowing this year with full-scale live creations, sculptures, elaborate stages, and visionary structures. During the last Symbiosis Gathering in 2009 at Yosemite National Park, the art created a surreal, dreamy feeling for the 4,000 participants with a giant metal tree house, artistic stage designs, and geometric shade covers.
The musical acts at Symbiosis are diverse, including genres of hip hop, R&B, jazz, funk, rock, acoustic, electronic, psytrance, bass, house, dubstep, drum and bass, downtempo, minimal, sacred, world, kirtan, and much more. Performers vary from internationally known to locally talented producers, DJs, and bands, to fire dancing, circus acts, aerial acrobats, and contortionists. This year headliners include James Blake, Little Dragon, Beats Antique, Tipper, PaNTy RAid, Claude VonStroke, Damian Lazarus, Dub Kirtan All Stars, Emancipator, Entheogenic, FreQ Nasty, Gang Gang Dance, Lyrics Born, Minilogue, OPIUO, Paper Diamond, Random Rab, Shlohmo, Salva, Vau de Vire Society, Rupa & the April Fishes, Diego’s Umbrella, Vagabond OPERA, Shotgun Wedding Quintet, An-Ten-Nae, Antix, Blueteck, Cheb i Sabbah, Christian Martin, Heavyweight Dub Champion, GAUDI, Vibesquad, Justin Martin, Love & Light, and over a 100 more artists.
Starting with its first event in 2005 in Santa Cruz, the Symbiosis founders have always found a remote, unique venue location that sets this event apart from others. This year, Pyramid Lake’s native land and ancient surroundings will host a celebration of the dark side of the moon and a symbiosis of artistic expression.
