‘Ask a man which way he is going to vote, and he will probably tell you. Ask him, however, why, and vagueness is all.’
~ Bernard Levin (1928-2004) English author and journalist
My mission was to interview and photograph all 21candidates running for Truckee Town Council, Truckee Donner PUD, the School Board and the Airport Board, in a two-week time frame. Meanwhile other Moonshine colleagues were busy interviewing the candidates for Squaw Valley PSD and Incline Village GID, as well as Measure U proponents and opponents. Melissa Siig had the unique assignment of interviewing those candidates who ran unopposed.
While September 12 to 25 was an extremely busy and sometimes grueling time for me, the experience was enlightening and mostly fun. When I sat down with the candidates on their decks, in their living rooms, or over a cup of coffee, I wanted to discover who they really are, why they’re running, what they stand for, what they’re made of and what they value. Turns out that was the easy part!
Much more difficult was condensing pages of notes down to concise interview highlights that effectively convey each candidate’s message to voters. There were a few common threads. They all have unique and interesting stories to tell, seem to really love their communities and have a desire to serve.
Beyond that, there is a huge range in life experience, political savvy, worldview, motivation and potential effectiveness at governing. Use these profiles to get you started, then endeavor to find out as much as you can on your own. Attend forums, visit websites, and get in touch with the candidates directly. Then, of course, vote!
Editor’s Note: Moonshine Ink had originally intended to conduct candidate interviews and publish public endorsements. However, as often is the case, we cannot do everything that we dream. Just getting this edition to the press was a monumental task. We hope to have more resources to conduct interviews and make endorsements in the next election. Stay tuned.
