Local Artist Featured in Forbes

Truckee artist Sara Zimmerman hit the big time with Unearthed Comics, a funny, intelligent, web-based comic strip that recently debuted on Forbes.com. The “Entrepreneur’s Brain,” which illustrates the humor in time management for the self-employed, was selected by Forbes contributor Kate Harrison to run with her article about the struggles of being an entrepreneur.

It was one of three cartoons used; the other two were from popular cartoonists Randy Glasbergen and Mike Baldwin.

Launched in November 2012, Unearthed Comics features Zimmerman’s observations about business and technology, parenting and children, health and food, art and music, sports and outdoors, and more. The artist recently hit her 50th cartoon benchmark for her one-panel cartoons, which can be seen at UnearthedComics.com or on Facebook. Welk (of Lawrence Welk, that is) Buys Northstar Lodge

The company that was founded by the late Lawrence Welk announced this month the purchase of Northstar Lodge, a four-story condominium development at the base of the mountain. Welk Resorts, a division of the Escondido-based company that bears the same name, purchased the Hyatt Residence Club property for an undisclosed price. The transaction includes the 23 remaining unsold whole ownership and fractional residential units, in addition to two entitled development parcels for future phases of the project.

The adjacent development parcels are entitled for an additional 67 units totaling more than 100,000 square feet.

Resort Equities Realty, a San Francisco company with offices in Tahoe, Newport Beach, and Denver, will oversee the sale of some residences within the existing phase of the project.

Welk Resorts is a family-owned company. Lawrence Welk was a legendary musician and band leader whose TV show was a weekly event for many families in the two decades following its debut in 1951.

Truckee.com Website Wins Awards

The Reno ADDY Awards gave its gold medal and Best of Show to Truckee.com, a website launched in October that’s dedicated to promoting tourism.

The Truckee.com digital campaign includes the recently redesigned website that promotes Truckee as a destination, and online ads that drive visitors to the website.

“This was a great campaign; banner ads that made you want to click and a website that made you want to keep exploring,” ADDY Judge Jim Mathis said.

“Most of all, the complete package made me want to visit the Truckee area. In a market with a lot of great tourism ads, these stood out.”

The ADDY Awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, recognizing and rewarding creative excellence in the art of advertising. Every year approximately 60,000 entries are submitted in local ADDY competitions.

The banner ads were placed on TripAdvisor.com, on Go-California.com, and in an Etarget stand-alone e-mail. The campaign was developed and placed by EXL Media of Incline Village. The website and ads were designed by CLM Design Group in Reno.

“Truckee has such a cool vibe and is such an awesome place — it is easy to get creative when designing campaigns to promote Truckee,” said CLM Design Group owner Gail Letcher.

Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation, the local ADDY Awards is the first of a three-tiered competition. Local winners go on to compete against other winners within their regions in one of 14 district competitions. District winners are then forwarded to the National ADDY Awards competition.
