Like many aspiring artists, Ruth Jaeger learned to draw so she could paint. She found out, though, that drawing was more fun than painting, and she was better at it. Jaeger likes drawing because it is so convenient, it,s quick and less demanding. It’s easy to carry around a sketchbook, a few pencils, felt tip pens, maybe a small paint box to fill in color. And there’s a social aspect to it, since she can sketch in cafés, restaurants, meetings, the doctor’s office, airports — all places where she is surrounded by people and potential unwitting models.
The artist belongs to an informal movement called Urban Sketchers. This group is comprised of various artists who draw on-site and who draw all the time. They draw for the pleasure of drawing and to encourage others to join them. You can follow Jaeger on Instagram @jaeger_ruth.
